"For years, he used the most beautiful parts of me against me. It wasn’t until I was at La Salle that I was finally able to reclaim my compassion, my drive, my spark, and my purpose."

About Sign of Hope

Sign of Hope raises vital funds needed to support the many programs offered by Catholic Social Services throughout Edmonton and central Alberta. Our programs empower and lift thousands of vulnerable Albertans each year, touching every area in which we work and all communities in which we are active.

Our donors  support as many as 20 donor-funded programs,  providing care for people that would otherwise have nowhere to turn in their hour of greatest need. With your support, we can continue uplifting thousands of Albertans each year and ensure no one in need falls through the cracks.

Here is a snapshot of a few ways donor support is changing lives across central Alberta:

  • Alpha House is able to support as many as 30 men each year as they work to overcome addiction, maintain sobriety, and lead purposeful lives, while transitioning back into the community.

  • The Elder Abuse Resource and Supports (EARS) program help hundreds of seniors at risk of abuse and neglect each year through crisis response, risk assessment, outreach, and intervention.

  • Last year, McDaniel Youth Services was able to support 138 youth living with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) diagnosis as they navigate everyday life, build friendships, and participate in their community.

  • La Salle Shelter, a second stage shelter, helped more than 30 women and their children escape domestic violence and transition into stable housing.

  • The Welcome Home has worked with 45 recently-housed participants and 97% of those have remained off the streets and are rebuilding their lives.

  • Gianna Centre supported 174 vulnerable women and their families with pregnancy resources and supports, including pre and post-natal services and baby care items.

  • Kairos House provided a safe place for adults living with HIV and AIDS to come to regain control of their health and rebuild their lives, or receive compassionate end-of-life care and live out their final months with dignity.

  • The Parenting in Two Cultures program helped 89 newcomers adapt to changing family dynamics and Canadian parenting expectations.

  • The Morning Star program launched in Red Deer, providing outreach, as well as a safe place for vulnerable women to access basic necessities such as food and personal hygiene products, laundry, and shower facilities.

  • Mercy Counselling was able to provide clinical counselling services to as many as 60% of their clients, through Sign of Hope.

  • St. Joseph’s was able to provide end-of-life care to those who are terminally ill and vulnerably-housed or homeless, who may otherwise spend their final months on the street and alone.

  • St. Katharine Drexel Place was able to support dozens of women to stabilize their lives by helping them pursue career and educational goals, focus on family, and find permanent residence in the community.

  • Cultural Links connected newcomers with established Canadian volunteers to help them learn about Canadian culture and practice their English.

  • The Intercultural Education Program held workshops for community organizations to increase cultural awareness, competency, and skills for working and living in a diverse society.

  • The Refugee Resettlement Program welcomed hundreds of newly arrived refugees in Red Deer, Edmonton, and Lloydminster, and supported them through the settlement process.

  • Valeda House was able to provide temporary shelter for women in crisis who are pregnant or have small children.

Gifts of Securities

By donating publicly traded securities, you eliminate the capital gains tax that you’d have to pay if you sold the securities and then donated the proceeds. You’ll also receive a charitable tax receipt for your donation.

Securities can include stocks, mutual funds, segregated funds, bonds, flow-through shares, and employee stock options.

Giving is simple. Consult your financial advisor to decide which investments make the most financial and philanthropic impact. Then ask your broker to transfer your securities to the Sign of Hope by completing the transfer form*. And finally, let us know you have made your gift so we can share how your gift is creating hope for those in need.
